Course Objectives

At the end of this module, the learner will be able to:

  • Observe the code of ethics on client confidentiality and gaining informed consent.
  • Apply counselling models and theories to develop practical and effective probing and counselling skills.
  • Apply counselling techniques and skills to motivate positive change in client’s thoughts and being

The main focus of the course is to apply counselling techniques and skills throughout an effective 5-step counselling process in order to draw out the strengths, positives and power in the counselees to help them to cope/overcome their difficulties and promote change and growth.

Course Overview

This course is for learners who want to increase their competency by learning higher-level counselling skills to promote change and growth in peoples' lives. This course is a continuation to the WSQ-Practical Counselling Basic or Certificate in Practical Counselling (Basic) or any other basic counselling equivalent certificate (form other training organisations). It is for learners who want to increase their competency and expand their skill set in helping people in need. 

This course is also a pre-requisite for attending the Certificate in Practical Counselling (Advanced) in Solution-Focused Counselling course.

Who Should Attend

The course is targeted at workers who work with people such as new entrants to social work, social workers, para-counsellors, community workers and even administrative staff in social service sector. This course is also suitable for the general public who are interested to become effective people helpers to help people in distress as well as those who take up the course to help themselves manage their own problems/issues.

Certification Obtained and Conferred by

Participants who meet 75% class attendance will be awarded a Certificate of Accomplishment by the Academy of Human Development.


Pre-requisites

This course is intermediate level and as such, those who sign up for this course need to have completed the WSQ-PCB offered by AHD or its equivalent.


Medium of Instruction & Trainer

Mrs Chan Swee Fen has more than 18 years of training experience; imparting knowledge and expertise in the area of parenting, marriage, personal effectiveness, group dynamics/facilitation and counselling. Her participants include staff from hospitals, churches, private and public educational institutions, corporate organisations and government agencies/statutory boards. She holds a Master’s degree in Counseling and Psychotherapy and before that, she had completed a Social Work degree from NUS. She is a very experienced and enthusiastic trainer who knows how to balance teaching and fun in the conduct of her training.
