Course Objectives

At the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Examine the professional values from SFBT perspective.
  • Apply SFBT techniques and manage resistance in the counselling process.
  • Apply solution building tools and SFBT interviewing techniques in counselling.
  • Practice the SFBT approach to engage and support clients in solution building.

Course Overview

Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is an evidence-based approach with more than 3 decades of research to counselling and therapy that focuses on solution-building instead of dwelling on a client's past or analyzing their issues. It is future-oriented, designed to help clients identify and achieve their desired outcome in a timely manner, making it time-efficient for therapists as well as for clients. It is a collaborative approach that involves the client and therapist working together to identify solutions, and a client-centred approach that recognises the unique needs, preferences and resources of each client, making it a flexible and adaptable approach.

SFBT has been found to be effective in a variety of settings, including mental health, addiction treatment, education and healthcare, and with a wide range of clients, including individuals, couples, families, and groups. This course will help to upskill one's knowledge and abilities in counselling through the use of SFBT. Participants will learn concrete skills and techniques that they can apply immediately in their practice.
