Appreciating Resistance

What's In It For Me

In this workshop, participants will learn to appreciate and manage resistance in working with clients in a family service center context. Examples will be provided specific to working with parents and adolescents during first session, and engaging adolescents who do not want to talk to you but are mandated to attend sessions with you.

Demonstration interviews and/or video recordings will be used to highlight principles for dealing with resistance. Participants will be introduced to the idea of goal creating language and techniques and how to manage “I Don’t Know” responses.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is suitable for Social Workers, Counselors and Youth Workers working in a family service center setting and/or managing YouthGo!, GP, ESU or youth-mandated cases. Anyone who works with youths in other settings will also benefit from this training.
