What's In It For Me

Those who went through traumatic experiences during childhood are likely to display a wide range of psychological and functional disorders, trauma is known to be damaging to the attachment system. When traumatized clients present themselves in therapy, they are in need of a different or corrective attachment experience with their therapist, so that they can restructure their mental representation of themselves and others. How the therapist can facilitate a corrective attachment experience is the key interest that sets the stage of this training.

Course Overview

This workshop provides an introduction to attachment theory and examines how attachment manifests in daily life as well as in therapy. Participants will learn how to identify and manage different attachment presentations in therapy. They will develop a better awareness of their contribution to the interaction in therapy. In addition, they will also explore the different aspects of equipping and using themselves as tools in facilitating healing for their clients.

As part of developing the capacity to attend to individuals with attachment injury, this workshop uses experiential activities to help participants to develop better awareness of ways they can attend to and nourish themselves, so that they have enough to share with others in their personal and professional lives.

Course Objectives


  • To understand the nature and the neurobiology of attachment.
  • To understand the early and adult attachment process
  • To gain a better understanding of patterns of attachment
  • To develop an appreciation on how attachment relationships contribute to the shaping of self.

  • To develop an awareness of the mutuality of the therapeutic relationship and how to facilitate a corrective experience.

Medium of Instruction & Trainer

Dr. Guo Lih Jia has been involved in counseling, supervision and training for more than 10 years with the intention of equipping people helpers in supporting individuals to improve their quality of life. She has worked in the family service center and counseling center in Singapore and is familiar with the common challenges people helpers face in their quest to support those in need. 

Lih Jia is an experienced trainer conducting training in different settings to develop knowledge and skills of practitioners from communities in the local and over the globe. She has involved in lecturing in academic programs, such as Diploma in Counseling, Diploma in Family Life Education, Bachelor in Counselling, and Bachelor in Social Work, to name a few. 

Academically, Lih Jia holds a Doctor of Psychology (USA), Master of Social Science in Counseling (AU), Master of Science in Mathematics (USA) and Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Mathematics & Computer Science (CA). Professionally, Lih Jia was formerly working in the IT industry as a system architect and project manager. These experiences helped her to develop a sharp analytical mind. After changing her career into the helping profession, Lih Jia has been actively involved in face-to-face counseling, individual and group supervision and conducting training in academic settings and continual education for existing practitioners. Her analytical mind enabled her to deconstruct complex concepts into easy-to-understand knowledge blocks; Lih Jia is well-known for her ability to help learners integrate building blocks of knowledge and translate them into practical life skills. 

Today, Lih Jia is focusing on clinical supervision and counseling-related training. She is passionate in equipping individuals to use self as a tool to facilitate healing. Because of the fervent enthusiasm, she is well known for reflective and inward-looking and experiential training sessions.
