· Make theoretically informed decisions about who to include in family sessions, and when

· Collaborate with families to develop an agenda and focus for family work

· Facilitate safe, respectful, family-sensitive family intervention

· Effectively manage family interactions, including managing difference and conflict

Course Overview

Family Work Skills is a 5-day experiential workshop providing participants with practice-based training in foundational family therapy concepts and skills relevant to their unique work context. The primary emphasis of the workshop is the acquisition of skills to effectively work with families - more than one person and more than one generation at the same time. Participants will acquire skill in deciding who to include in sessions (why and when) and how to collaborate with family members to develop a clear focus for the work. Experiential methods, including role-play, will be employed to teach specific techniques for managing family interactions; especially to promote a sense of emotional and cultural safety, respectful engagement with the therapist, and between family members as well as managing difference and conflict. This is invaluable training for practitioners seeking to intervene more systemically and effectively with their clients.
